Water supply system

SUE “Vodokanal of St. Petersburg” provides drinking water to the population of 5.3 million people as well as to companies and organizations of the city.

Vodokanal’s water supply activities include the following:

  • water intake and treatment;
  •  water distribution.

St. Petersburg takes water from surface and underground sources.

The main water source is the Neva River.

Around 98% of water is taken from the Neva and treated at 5 major waterworks:

  • Main Waterworks (MW)
  • Northern Waterworks (NW)
  • Southern Waterworks (SW)
  • Volkovskaya Waterworks (VW)
  • Kolpino Waterworks (KW)

St. Petersburg water supply system is a complex of interconnected engineering structures providing uninterrupted potable water supply to the consumers. The system includes 9 waterworks, 187 boosting pumping stations and 7414 km of networks and 2 sodium hypochlorite production plants.

The whole water supply system is divided into water supply zones:

1. The Southern water supply zone (on the basis of the Southern Waterworks)

The system includes:

  • The Southern Waterworks;
  • Dudergofskaya Waterworks;
  • Kolpino Waterworks;
  • Kronstadt Waterworks;
  • Petrodvorets Waterwroks
  • III and IV- elevation boosting pumping stations: Moskovskaya, Frunzenskaya, Uritskaya, South-Western, Rybatskaya, Kupchinskaya, Strelninskaya, Lomonosovskaya,LGU Petrodvortsovaya, Petrodvortsovaya, Pulkovskaya,Orlovskaya, Tallinskaya ;
  • Other III and IV- elevation boosting pumping stations;
  • Water distribution and transportation networks.

The Southern water supply zone provides potable water to Moskovsky, Frunzensky, Krasnoselsky, Kolpinsky, Kirovsky, Petrodvortsovy districts, as well as Kronstadt town, the left bank part of  Nevsky district.  Dudergofskaya Waterworks provides water to Krasnoe Selo.

2. The Northern water supply zone (on the basis of the Northern Waterworks)

The system includes:

  • The Northern Waterworks;
  • Zelenogorsk Waterworks;
  • Sestroretsk Waterworks;
  • underground water sources of Kurortny district;
  • III-elevation boosting pumping stations: Murinskaya, Kushelevskaya, Primorskaya, Severo-Primorskaya, Kolomyazhskaya, Ozero Dolgoe, Martynovskaya,  Parnasskaya, Osinovaya Roshcha, Gorskaya, Pesochnaya, Novoselkovskaya, Shuvalovskaya;
  • other III and IV- elevation boosting pumping stations;
  • water distribution and transportation networks.

The system provides potable water to Kurortny, Vyborgsky, Kalininsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Primorsky districts and right-bank part of Nevsky district.

3. The Central water supply zone

The system includes:

  • The Main Waterworks;
  • Volkovskaya Waterworks;
  • III and IV- elevation boosting pumping stations: Vasileostrovskaya, Gavanskaya, Petrogradskaya;
  • other III and IV- elevation boosting pumping stations;
  • water distribution and transportation networks

The system provides potable water to Petrogradsky, Tsentralny, Admiralteysky, Vasileostrovsky districts, part of Moskovsky, Kirovsky, Primorsky, Krasnogvardeysky, Frunzensky, Vyborgsky and Kalininsky districts.
