19.09.2014

The official meeting of the Public Council for the trilateral cooperation project “The Gulf of Finland Year” was held today.

The citywide festival “The Gulf of Finland – Area of Cooperation” is held in Petersburg on 19-20 September in the framework of the Gulf of Finland Year. On the first day of the festival, the Tavricheskiy Palace hosted the official meeting of the Public Councils  of Russia, Finland and Estonia under the trilateral cooperation project “The Gulf of Finland Year 2014”. The participants were welcomed by the Acting Governor of St. Petersburg G.S. Poltavchenko, Vice-Governor of the Leningrad Region Yu. V. Pakhomovskiy, Chairman of the Finnish Public Council for the Gulf of Finland Year M. Vanhanen, Vice-President of Estonian Nature Protection Society U. Telgmaa.

G.S. Poltavchenko mentioned that Petersburg is actively solving the problems related to preservation of the water system in the North-Western Federal District. Last year, the extension of the Northern Tunnel Collector was completed. Now, over 98 % of wastewater is treated in Petersburg. The task for the next years is to ensure a 100 % treatment level. A big part of the City Water and Wastewater Plan up to 2025 with an outlook to 2030, adopted last year, is dedicated to elimination of untreated wastewater discharge and improvement of treatment technologies.

G.S. Poltavchenko proposed that the Gulf of Finland – Area of Cooperation festival launched in Petersburg today, should become a tradition. It could be held alternately in St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Tallinn and other Baltic cities.

At the meeting, the participants watched the Gulf of Finland Year video-diary of actions implemented under the Gulf of Finland Year Plan in Russia, Finland and Estonia; and thanks to live transmission they could take part in the Water Lesson given at Vodokanal’s Youth Environmental Centre.  At the end of the meeting, school students from Russia, Finland and Estonia presented the Youth Declaration on the Gulf of Finland Protection and delivered it to official representatives of the three countries. The festive event was finalized by singing the anthem of the Gulf of Finland Year.

The exhibition of environmental installations “Youth – for the Gulf of Finland Year” in Ekaterininskiy Hall of the Tavricheskiy Palace has been prepared by the Petersburg school students under a Russian-Finnish project. G.S. Poltavchenko visited the exhibition and made notes on interactive exhibits. “Well done! Protection of the Gulf of Finland is our common concern, and participation of children in this effort is a good sign! I wish you every success in this important and relevant activity! May you have happiness, clean water, fresh air and peaceful sky above!” – he wrote to students of gymnasium 261 who presented their installation “Waterdrop rescue”.
