Record-breaking number of hatch thefts in 2017

10.01.2018

Last year, 640 manhole covers disappeared in St. Petersburg – the number has almost doubled compared to 2016 when 387 hatches were stolen. Nevskiy District retains its theft championship accounting for more than 40 % of crimes (259 cases). Kolpinskiy District comes second: 121 hatches were pilfered there. Krasnoselskiy District lost 78 hatches.

The loss of hatches has never been so severe.  Deputy Manager of Vodokanal’s operating data monitoring V.G. Barinov believes that the growth of thefts can be explained by several factors: “We are having a troubled situation in the country and people look for easy money. Hatches are easy to access: it is child’s play to lift a hatch and take it away. The risk of seizure is minor because thefts are committed at night while everyone is asleep. Moreover, it is very simple to dispose of the stolen property – scrap metal sells at good prices”.

However, there are districts in the city where not a single hatch was stolen last year. They are: Tsentralniy, Vasileostrovskiy, Petrogradskiy, Kronstadtskiy and Kurortniy.

Stolen hatches not only cause material loss for the company, but also pose a potential threat to the life and health of adults, children and animals.

Not all manholes in the city belong to Vodokanal. The company operates 630,000 manholes, most of them constructed on the sewers. If a maintenance crew sees that a manhole is owned by other organization the information is promptly communicated to relevant departments.

It should be reminded that SUE "Vodokanal of St. Petersburg" and GUP TEK (the heat supplier) established a joint working group for prevention of thefts. The working group specialists hold meetings with the police, check scrap metal collection points, and organize preventive actions together with district administrations.

Vodokanal asks the citizens to report the absence or damage of hatches as soon as possible, either by calling the company’s Hot Line ((812) 305-09-09, calls are received around the clock) or via a special service “Open hatch? Report!” on Vodokanal’s official website www.vodokanal.spb.ru.

Location of the open manhole (on a road or on a lawn), address of the nearest building and the contact phone number should be specified in the application form so that Vodokanal workers can find the place and then inform about the works they have done.
