Future of the Gulf of Finland was discussed in Helsinki


SUE “Vodokanal of St.Petersburg” representatives attended “The State and Future of the Gulf of Finland” forum, held in Helsinki on December 1. The forum coincided with the “Year of the Gulf of Finland 2014”, a joint initiative of Russia, Finland and Estonia, termination.

During the conference opening Kimmo Tiilikainen, Minister of Agriculture and Environment of Finland, noted that the main task of the Year of the Gulf of Finland, being the three countries cooperation strengthening, was achieved. More than 250 events, scientific forums, business meetings, educational projects were held. And now it is necessary to ensure the trilateral cooperation continuation.

Nuritdin Inamov, Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, highlighted the role of Vodokanal while his summing up of the Year of the Gulf of Finland in Russia. He named the Marine Mammals Research and Conservation Centre opening on the territory of the Repino wastewater treatment plant of Vodokanal of St.Petersburg as one of the most important events of the Year of the Gulf of Finland. He expressed his gratitude to all the employees of the Centre, who developed a unique method of the Baltic Sea pinnipeds rehabilitation. Nuritdin Inamov also spoke about the “Gulf of Finland - water area of ​​cooperation” festival held in September 2014 in St.Petersburg (with active participation of Vodokanal). In addition, one of the results of the Year of the Gulf of Finland was the further improvement of Vodokanal wastewater treatment technologies.

During the forum the officials, public figures, and scientists representing three countries were able to exchange knowledge and experience on the Gulf of Finland environmental status issues, as well as to discuss ideas for its further improvement.

We would like to remind that the year 2014 was declared the Year of the Gulf of Finland by the decision of three countries - Russia, Finland and Estonia. This initiative was put forward by the officials and the scientific community. The Year of the Gulf of Finland was officially opened on January 21, 2014 in Helsinki.

The Year of the Gulf of Finland was under the patronage of the Russian President Vladimir Putin from the Russian side, for the Finnish side this project was supervised by the Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, for the Estonian - Estonian President Toomas Ilves.

Vodokanal of St.Petersburg during the Year of the Gulf of Finland continued its efforts towards reduction of the negative impact on the city's water bodies. 98.5% of wastewater is currently treated in St.Petersburg due to the direct wastewater discharges closure along the Petrogradskaya embankment and in vicinity of the stadium “Petrovsky”. In 2014, the sewerage collector under the Admiralteyskaya Embankment construction was initiated aiming at closure of six direct wastewater discharges in the city center. The work was completed in April 2015.

Kronstadt, Kolpino, Pushkin, and Pontonny wastewater treatment plants modernization, as well as the Northern and Central WWTPs reconstruction was performed in 2014.

Seals pups assisting project reached its new level. The Marine Mammals Research and Conservation Centre opened in 2014 in Repino, has no analogues in Russia. The Foundation of the Baltic Seal Friends (www.balticseal.org) began its operation in the autumn of 2014. During the year of the Gulf of Finland the Centre professional zoologists cured 29 animals and helped to return to the nature for five Baltic ringed seals.

Educational projects of the Vodokanal Youth Environmental Centre, the traditional spring rollers rally, “The Universe of Water” museum complex program for the international “Museum Night”, “Gulf of Finland - water area of ​​cooperation” festival, and “The nearby sea” exhibition were dedicated to the Year of the Gulf of Finland.

The official closing of the Year of the Gulf of Finland in Russia took place on March 12, 2015.
