Finnish students visited Youth Environmental Centre

18.11.2015

In 16 - 18 November, Finnish school students (participants of the project “Awareness-raising of the young through the activities of the International Advanced Water Technologies Centre”) visited the Youth Environmental Centre of Vodokanal (YEC), St.Petersburg school and South-West Wastewater Treatment Plant. It was a return visit – St.Petersburg school students had made a study tour to the Finnish town of Lahti.

On Monday, Finnish students visited the Water Museum and got acquainted with the exhibits “Underground World of St.Petersburg” and “Universe of Water”.  Then, they attended an interactive session at the Youth Environmental Centre dedicated to the Baltic Sea. It is not the YEC teachers that conducted the session but St.Petersburg participants of the project “Awareness-raising of the young through the activities of the International Advanced Water Technologies Centre”.  In October, they had been trained by YEC specialists to become teachers themselves. On the second day, the students visited Lyceum No 179 where they learned how the teaching and learning activities were organized in Russia.  In the lyceum, the students presented the results of their work performed under the Raising Awareness Project. The young people had explored Vesijärvi lake in Finland:  measured the lake depth and water temperature on the surface, in and at the bottom of the lake.  Finnish school students had collected samples of water and phyto-and zooplankton for investigation. The chemical analysis of water samples had shown presence of nutrients (phosphates and nitrates). Besides, the students had learned that upper layers of water were cleaner, and phosphates were mainly identified in bottom layers of water. Diatoms and blue-green algae, as well as maggots, leeches, eggs of molluscs, etc. had been found in the samples of phyto-and zooplankton.

The study tour ended with the visit to South-West Wastewater Treatment Plant where the guests from Finland got acquainted with up-to-date technologies of wastewater treatment.

The Russian-Finnish environmental awareness raising project  “Awareness-raising of the young through the activities of the International Advanced Water Technologies Centre” was developed by the specialists of Youth Environmental Centre of Vodokanal and Lahti Region Development LADEC.
