Water for a big city
SUE “Vodokanal of St. Petersburg” provides drinking water to 5 million citizens and tens of thousands of companies and enterprises. One more task of Vodokanal is to collect and treat wastewater.
Since 2013, endangered pinnipeds - grey seals and (Baltic and Ladoga) ringed seals- have been rehabilitated at the premises of Repino wastewater treatment plant in the Kurortny District of St. Petersburg.

On 25-26 September, the delegation from Osaka, Japan, headed by the Vice-Mayor of Osaka Mr. Ryuichi Murakami visited St. Petersburg.
On Thursday, 25 September, representatives of Osaka City Government and Japanese companies visited Vodokanal and were introduced to its main activities. After that, the delegation visited Vodokanal’s Youth Environmental Centre and the Water Museum.
On Friday, 26 September, the guests from Japan attended a business workshop held on Vodokanal premises. According to the Chairman of External Relations Committee E.D. Grigoryev, this business workshop is seen as an effective tool of developing bilateral contacts. The Vice-Mayor of Osaka Mr. Ryuichi Murakami expressed his hope that the workshop would give an impetus to expansion of exchange between the two cities. The Consul General of Japan in St. Petersburg Yoshihiro Yamamura emphasized that Osaka and Petersburg have, in particular, one thing in common: both are located near water. It was voiced at the workshop that interaction between the cities in the field of water treatment and sewerage could be one of the main areas of cooperation.
Members of the Japanese delegation made presentations on International strategic integrated special zone of Osaka and its attractions and Economic situation and business opportunities in Osaka. A representative of Osaka Municipal Waterworks Bureau told about the water supply policy in Osaka, and a representative of Osaka City Construction Bureau told about the city wastewater sector. The presentation on pipe rehabilitation was made by the President of Sekisui SPR Europe GmbH.
The official visit of Osaka delegation to St. Petersburg coincided with the 35th anniversary of friendly relations. On 25 September, the Governor of St. Petersburg G.S. Poltavchenko met the Osaka delegation.
