Challenging projects

  • Reconstruction of the Southern Waterworks including construction of a new block K-6

After reconstruction the capacity of the Southern Waterworks will be 900,000 cubic meters per day, this will enable provision of reliable water supply for new developments in the southern part of St. Petersburg.

An important stage of the Southern Waterworks rehabilitation is the construction of the drinking water treatment block K-6.

  • Construction of a new water treatment block at the Southern Waterworks (K-6 Block)

The capacity of the new block is 350,000 m ³/d. The block will be put into operation at the end of 2009, thus connecting the new developments of the South-Western coastal part of the city (including “The Baltic Pearl” Complex) and the industrial area of Shushary zone, to water networks.

The water treatment block of the Sothern Waterworks will include the following process components:

  • Connection to the existing water intake system.
  •  Pre-ozonation.
  • Clarification: coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation in lamellar clarifiers, sludge thickening, sludge recirculation and removal.
  •  Filtration in two-layer (sand/activated granular carbon) rapid gravity filters.
  • Water-to-air system of filter backwashing.
  •  Equalization, treatment and recovery of reject flush water.
  • Sludge treatment.
  • Storage, preparation and dozing of chemicals.
  • Water disinfection with chloramine.

With the above water treatment technology, the produced water will fully meet the existing hygienic standards.

  • Construction of a new water treatment block at the Main Waterworks

The design of the Main Waterworks rehabilitation project including the construction of a new 500,000 m3/d treatment block was completed in 2008. The new block will allow to take the outdated facilities out of operation and ensure water supply to the raised areas of Vasilievsky Island and to “New Holland” area.

  • Reconstruction of the Northern Waterworks

The reconstruction of the Northern Waterworks to reach the capacity of 700,000m3/d will guarantee water supply to new developments in the Northern coastal areas, settlements of Kamenka, Kolomyagi, Severnaya Dolina and a number of industrial zones.

  • Reconstruction of Kolpino Waterworks

The reconstruction of Kolpino Waterworks to reach the capacity of 250,000 m3/d will guarantee water supply to Kolpinsly and Pushkinsky districts.

  • Construction of waterworks in Kurortny district (using underground water sources)

Development of underground water resources "Molodezhnoe" and "Solnechnoe" will let Kurortny district use its own local water sources.

  • Construction of inverted siphon between the town of Kronstadt and the mainland

In 2008, the installation of two lines of the inverted siphon under the bottom of the Gulf of Finland continued. Both lines, 8 km each, will provide the town of Kronstadt with water taken from underground sources of Izhorskaya mound. After the completion of the works, the efficiency of Kronstadt water supply system will increase.

  • Other projects

Besides, construction of new water pipelines in various districts of St. Petersburg (including construction of a separate water pipeline from the Main Waterworks to the raised territories of Vasilievsky Island and CHP-7) is planned.
