Major projects

Among the major projects being implemented by SUE "Vodokanal of St. Petersburg" are:

The Neva Untreated Wastewater Discharge Closure Programme

This Programme aims to complete by 2012 the Northern Sewer – the main sewer in the northern part of the city, thus providing treatment of 98-99% of all city wastewater, and to upgrade the Northern WWTP and the Central WWTP for the purpose of complying with the new HELCOM requirements regarding enhanced phosphorus and nitrogen removal from wastewater.

The Programme is financed from the municipal and federal budgets, Vodokanal’s own funds and raised, off-budget funds. In May-June 2009 Vodokanal signed loan agreements with each of the European Bank for reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank and Nordic Investment Bank, for the loans in the total amount of MEUR 60. Moreover, Vodokanal is given MEUR 40 of grants by international organizations for the Programme.

Note:

The Northern Sewer Extension Project was approved in 1989 by the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR. The new, 12 km-long section of the sewer was needed by the city as it was necessary to convey the sewage of households and industrial companies in Primorsky, Vyborgsky, Kalininsky, Krasnogvardeysky Districts and some parts of Nevsky and Central Districts to the treatment facilities in the town of Olgino – the Northern WWTP.

Initially, the estimated Project construction period was 10 years. However, in 1993 – 2000 the construction was suspended because the financing stopped. In 2001 the St. Petersburg budget started to allocate funds in order to maintain the construction site in an operational condition but the allocations were insufficient for the full-scale works as had been planned. In 2005 a new phase in the sewer construction began.

The first stage of the Northern Sewer extension was put into operation in autumn 2008. It enabled the channeling to the sewerage system of 90,000 m3/day of wastewater which had been discharged untreated previously, and to reach 87% of wastewater treatment in St. Petersburg.

The Northern Sewer extension has two lines, 12.2 km each. The inner diameter of the sewer is 3.3m, outer diameter – 4.1m, maximum depth – 90m.

Completion of the new water treatment block K-6 at the Southern Waterworks. The new block will be put into operation in June 2010. Capacity: 350,000 m3 of water per day.

The most advanced technologies are used to build the K-6 Block. There are no analogs in Russia for the time being.

The process solution used for the design and construction of K-6 Block has the following specific features :

  • pre-ozonation of water by small ozone doses to ensure surface oxidation of humic compounds and improve their subsequent coagulation,
  • water sedimentation after coagulation in a thin-layer lamella clarifier for more effective removal of suspended solids compared to traditional sedimentation tanks,
  • water filtration in double-bed filters with granular activated carbon and quartz sand to further remove dissolved organic compounds, including oil.
  • The flush water produced at the K-6 Block will be treated by sedimentation, and the sediments will be disposed separately to prevent pollution of the Neva water.

All water treated in the Block will be disinfected by sodium hypochlorite and ammonia sulfate and, finally, by UV exposure.
